Psalm 2

Observations:
The psalmist exhorted the pagan nations to abandon their rebellious plans against the Lord and His anointed king and to submit to the authority of the Son whom God has ordained to rule the nations with a rod of iron.
Application:
This is a great Messianic Psalm. Who else but Jesus could the "Son" refer to? He will rule the nations - that's prophetic of what He will do in the end times, although in the present He rules over all the earth, but not as a benevolent dictator. God who sits in the heavens "laughs" at man's puny ways of ignoring Him or attempts to rebel. We must really be a source of laughter to Almighty God these days as man is doing all he can to try to take God out of Christmas - does anyone see the first 5 letters of Christmas - "Christ!!" Kind of hard to take something out that is right there in front of our faces. Perhaps that's why "Happy Holidays," is the new fashion. I enjoy saying "Merry Christmas" to folks and watching them break out in a broad smile. Let's keep Christ in Christmas and be less of a source of laughter for God!

Psalm 1

Personal Reflections:
The kids all came home for Thanksgiving and all made it back to Nashville safely. Thank you, God!  Had a lovely time, although I think the kids are finding mom and dad a bit boring compared to their busy schedules. We like to sit and talk, and they want to get up and move - just different stages of life.
Observations:
You are blessed if you don't hang out with those that are unsaved and mock the things of Christ. A Christian's happiness should be in God and he should be studying the Word continually. If he does this, he will be firmly rooted in the faith and will be able to withstand troubles that come his way. The unsaved are not so favored, but are blown away in the wind because they have no roots. God knows the ways of the righteous and the ungodly. They all will be judged one day. Instead of being in the assembly of the righteous the wicked will perish.
Application:
Hanging out with the unsaved is a dangerous proposition. We think too highly of ourselves - that we will be able to "change" them and that they will not change us. All too often they end up changing us! This chapter warns of that. First you have casual contact with them (walk with them). Then it gets a little more intimate - you stand with them and talk. You are beginning to listen to them. Finally, it says you sit with them - you are spending time and eating "hanging out" with scoffers - those that despise the One you say you love. If someone were to make fun of one of my children or husband - the last thing I would do would be to sit down with them and listen to their tirades! Why then, do I put up with those who mock my Lord?!
The other challenge of this passage is to be firmly planted - have roots that go down deep. Trials will come to all of us. Others will know how deeply we are rooted by the way we handle those problems. A healthy tree needs to be yielding fruit. How much fruit am I producing? Do I even care?! Do those around me that don't know the Lord, do they know there is a difference between me and them? Do I make Christ "attractive to them - seeing Christ in me should make them desirous to have Him too. I fear, that I am not hidden in Christ, but rather He is hidden in me, and others can't see Him - they only see me.
"Lord, make me a firmly rooted Christian who bears fruit for you. Don't allow me to be comfortable around those who mock your name. Give me a holy anger towards those who scoff the things of God."

Thanksgiving Eve

Psalm 9:1
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;
I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
Psalm 9:1
The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice
glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly,
I will show the salvation of God!"
Psalm 92:1
It is good to give thanks to the LORD
To sing praises to your name, O Most High;

Psalm 119:169-176

Observation:
The psalmist begins and ends this last portion with the cry of the lost sheep that has gone astray. He realizes his need for understanding of the Word. He pleads for his crys to be heard and for deliverance. Lips to sing praise, and a tongue to sind the Word are his further desire. He asks for God's hand to always be at the ready to help him. He longs for God to save him and affirms that God's Word is always uppermost in his thoughts and his life. When he goes astray, he asks for God to seek him out because he has kept  God's commandments.
Application:
All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned, everyone, to his own way. BUT God laid on Jesus our punishment for straying and turning away. May I be like the psalmist desiring God to find me when I inevitably turn away! May I not stubbornly keep going away from the One who can save me!

Psalm 119:161-168

Observation:
The writer says that though powerful people hate him without cause (persecute), he will continue to stand by God's Word. He gets excited when he discovers the treasures (great spoil) he finds there. He says he prayers seven times a day because it brings him peace (shalom). He knows that God's salvation from his troubles is coming because he has been obedient to the Word. His obedience comes from his love of the Word and the knowledge that God both knows and directs his path.
Application:
To be so focused on God that I am in an attitude of praise and worship throughout the day is a goal to strive for. I get so busy in doing things that I all too frequently crowd God out! When I am living in this frenetic way, I will not experience the great shalom the writer speaks of. Don't we all want peace in our lives - I know I do!
Prayer:
Lord help the children as they sing tomorrow to sing to You! May you be pleased with the praises we bring. Help me to direct them properly and don't allow my nerves to show. Let me be an example of calmness and trust in You! May we continually learn the lessons from Hebrews 11:6 - "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone that comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him."

Psalm 119:153-160

Observation:
David tells God to look at his affliction and rescue him because he has been faithful to God's Word. God, be my advocate and plead my case; redeem and revive me. The wicked will not be saved because they don't seek You. He has lots of persecutors and adversaries, but still keeps God's laws. He contrasts the wicked who are treacherous and loathe God's Word with his love for God's precepts.
Application:
God's compassion is great to me (156) just as it was to David. I need to show compassion to those around me. It's not enough to receive God's grace to me - we are to give to others what we have been given. If that truly was how I lived my life, people couldn't help but be attracted to the light of Jesus they'd see in me!

Psalm 119:145-152

Observation:
The psalmist cried out to God to deliver him because he obeyed, hoped in, and meditated on His Word. His enemies who where near him - were far removed from God's Word. He knows God is near him. He grew up knowing God's Word and knew they are eternal.
Application:
He makes reading and meditating on God's Word a priority. He does this at night and early in the morning probably while others slept and all was quiet and free of distractions. This is a great example for me - to get to bed earlier enough at night so that I can wake up early to ensure I have time for my QT first thing. I always feel so much better starting the day this way. Generally now, I have QT late at night which is also a calming way to end the day and prepare for a relaxing sleep while thinking over what I've just read. No matter how I do it - the important thing is to do it!!

Psalm 119: 137-144

Overview:
Righteousness begins this verse and righteousness ends it. The writer is filled with adoration and praise as he speaks of some of the attributes of God. God is righteous and so are His words. David's zeal consumes him (he is filled w/ righteous indignation) against those who don't obey God's Word.YOUR PROMISE (v. 140) IS WELL TRIED, AND YOUR SERVANT LOVES IT. No matter what comes his way (143) it is God's Word that holds him up. He concludes w/ asking for understanding God's Word so that he may truly live life to its fullest.
Application:
I love verse 140!! I too have relied on God's promises and found them to be trustworthy. And furthermore, this servant loves it as well! There are precious things we can count on in this world that won't let us down - God is the only thing - the only One who can be counted on time and time again. Each time we "test" Him, He is found faithful. Thank you God for being my lifeline that I can cling to when all around me is in a messed up sinful state. I would have no one if it weren't for You!!

Psalm 119:129-136

Overview:
Because Your Word is so wonderful, I keep it. As Your Word unfolds it give off the light of understanding that helps even the simple minded to comprehend its truths. I have such longing for your Word, I am like a dog who opens wide it's mouth and pants w/ anticipation of being fed. Be gracious to me because you love those who love Your name. Don't let sin get the better of me, plant my feet solidly in your Word. I want always to be obedient to Your Word - keep oppressors from me; make Your face shine upon me; teach me your laws. I weep (my eyes shed streams of water) when I do not keep your Word.
Application:
Some really powerful word pictures: v. 131 "I opened my mouth wide and panted ...longed for your commandments." v. 136 "My eyes shed streams of water, because they do not keep Your law." What longing and what conviction the writer feels! God, give me that passion for your Word. I don't want to just talk about it, I want to feel it like David with my whole being. Make me love you and Your Word so much that I pant for it, and weep when I do not obey it!!

Psalm 119:121-128

Overview:
The writer is in a one-way dialogue with God. He is pointing out that he has done righteously, he has poured over God's Word and kept what it says. Now he is asking the LORD, Jehovah, to act (126) and punish those who don't believe in Him and do not keep God's laws.
Application:
God is omnipotent - He has the ability to do what He pleases. The writer knows God hates sin and scoffers of His Word and name, so what he is asking would be in accordance with God's will. It stikes me how often throughout Psalm 119, David keeps bringing up how righteous he is and how unrighteous are his enemies. God knows the true motivation for our obedience - He knows my heart just as He knew David's heart, so God certainly didn't need to be reminded of His servant's faithfulness. So why did David keep saying it? Perhaps he was reminding himself. When I am "oppressed" by people, anxiety etc. I need to remind myself that I am God's very own. That seems to be the only thing that brings true peace and comfort to my soul. It's probably a combination of reasons: style of writing, and not asking as much as affirming.

Psalm 119:113-120

Overview:
Skeptics are my enemies, but I love your Word. I take refuge in Your hiding place; I wait for your Word.
You are my protection as I trust in Your Word. So that I can follow your Word w/o distraction I get rid of those who don't love and follow You. Your Word keeps me going - it's the source of life. Please reward my faithfulness. You have rejected those who have rejected you - therefore I fear You and am fearful of Your judgments.
Application:
The writer shows the sharp contrast between those who love God's Word (him) and those who reject the Word. He has seen God sift throw the wicked and discard them - that is enough for him to be ever mindful that that could happen to him if he too does not obey God's Word. Fear is not a bad thing when it causes us to be safe and do the right thing. Yes, God is my loving heavenly Father, but at the same time because of his sinlessness and purity, He wants me to strive to be like Him. I don't get a pass because I'm "only human." I have the indwelling Holy Spirit as my guide, my strength, my Convictor. I am without excuse because I am not alone.
How comforting to know I can run to Him for protection and shelter. His shield is fighting off the spears and arrows of the enemy that seek to would me. "Lord, may the circumstances of this day - all of them glorify You. Thank you for what You did and what You will do. Confirm in our hearts the direction we are to take. We love You, Lord, and look to you for guidance and direction."

Psalm 119:105-112

Overview:
Your Word lights my way - it shows me what to do in the present and illumines the path to my future. I have made a solemn vow to keep what is written in Your Word. I am troubled on every side - make me alive in Your Word. Accept my praises and teach me your Truths. My life can be snuffed out and discarded at anytime, yet I stay true to Your Word. Those who do not know you lay snares and try to entrap me, still I steadfastly trust in your Word. Your Word is my inheritance - all my hope for the future. I have purposed in my life to do what you say forever - until the end of my life.
Application:
Your Word is EVERYTHING - not a part of my life, but everything. I spoke with a friend who is struggling about the existence of God as a result of bad situations in her life. The only counsel I could give that made any sense was to say how well do you know God. Are you daily in His Word? How can you know someone if you refuse to communicate with them? You don't want God to treat you like a puppet, even knowing if He did you would be safe, and happy. We all want freedom to make up our own minds - that's where the trouble comes - trouble is a result of OUR bad choices. But we blame God for allowing injustice, anger and hurt into our lives. Did He do that - or did we?!
God, You sure don't need my help proving You are God - that you do exist, but give me the words to say, and help her to understand your Word like never before!! You loved her enough to die for her, please reveal yourself to her and keep the enemy and doubts and resistance to you away.

Psalm 119: 97-104

Overview:
I continually think about and love your Word! Because I have spent time in your Word and it is uppermost in my mind, I am able to deal wisely with my enemies. It has also made me understand things that even my teachers don't know. Because I do what your Word says I discern more than my elders. I strive to keep your Word and not do evil. You, God, have taught me your Word and I have listened and not turned away. Your words are sweet as honey. My intelligence comes from studying your Word, and that has made me hate all that is false.
Application:
I have what David did not - the whole Word of God. Do I love it with the obvious depth that he did? I've got to say, "No" - much to my shame! If I did, would I miss one opportunity to meet with my Lord through the pages of His Word in my QTs? I still can go through an entire day continually promising myself, "After I do___, then I'll have my QT." Certainly not the habit of David. It seems to me I am missing something. QT shouldn't be all about discipline. It should be like breathing - something that I can't do without - something that comes from my love for the Lord.
"Lord, help me to love you and your Word the way you would have me love."

Psalm 119: 89 - 96

Overview:
All else changes, but your Word is "firmly fixed in the heavens." God you are continually faithful to all generations, just as the earth you created stands fast. Because you have decreed it to be so they stand because everything is subject to you. I don't know where I'd be if it wasn't for your Word - I would have wandered away. Your Word has revived me. Save me now, because I have pursued your Word. The ungodly look for an opportunity to destroy me - so I diligently study your Word. All things come to an end, but your Word is vast.
Application:
The only constant I have is God and His Word. The best of friends will and have failed me - even family disappoints and lets me down. But never God! When He seems distant - I know it's me - it's not Him. He has not moved or changed. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. When my world is shaking - heaven stands! When my feelings have been hurt, when I have been wounded by the very ones I hold dear, God's Word is my faithful friend.

Psalm 119: 81 - 88

Overview:

The writer has been persecuted and is presently suffering from his enemies. He feels like he hasn't a friend in the world and is begging for God to rescue him from his distress. His hope - that which he clings to is God's Word. He longs with anxious anticipation for God to fulfill His promise and comfort him.  He gives us a great word picture of what he feels like - like a wineskin in the smoke. A wineskin in the smoke would get dry and parched and be rendered useless. David feels like he's been reduced to the uselessness of a wineskin in because of his tormentors. He is used up mentally, physically, emotionally - his strength is almost gone. He asks, "How can I continue on? When are you going to judge those who persecute and lie about me and set traps for me? They don't live according to your Word - but I do! Even though they have tried to finish me off, I haven't forsaken your Word - it's only Your Word and Your love that has given me life and your steadfast continual love has kept me going.
Application:
Have you ever felt like that? I sure have! Miserable place to be. Just as David did, we need to cry out to God for his salvation and cling to the promises of His Word that "He will never leave us, or forsake us." Jealousy, maliciousness and outright evil was true in his day, just as it is in ours. Searching for the why of it, will cast us further into the pit of depression. Those that act in that manner must answer to God for their actions. We cannot fix them or show them the error of their ways, as they are often set on their path of "destroying" us. What we must do is live above reproach, continually look to God for His strength to get through this, knowing He has not let anything come into our lives that we (with His Almighty power) can't handle. Our job is to work on us - that's the only thing we have control over. God will take care and judge those who persecute us - that's not our job. Learn the lessons God wants you to learn from these experiences and move on! Don't let someone else's sin hold you back from being the best you can be for the kingdom of God. Key to this is that you must be in God's Word. Without that nourishment, you will feel dried up and useless like David. Even when you feel alone - those are just feelings, and we can't trust our feelings. He is "an ever present help in time of trouble." Cling to Him, trust in the promises of His Word, be above reproach, and hold your head up high - you are a child of the KING!!

Psalm 119:73 - 80

Overview:
You've created me, so help me understand your Word. When people who love You see me,  they will rejoice because I've put my trust in your Word. Your word brings comfort and also challenges me, because You want righteousness in me. I need your love and mercy because I delight in and love your law. Even tho others around me are filled with wrong motives and try to shame me with their lies, I will continue to put my mind on Your Word. I pray my heart will be blameless before you and I will not be put to shame!
Application:
As long as my eyes are fixed on You, God - what others have to say should be of no consequence. It is You that I seek approval from. It is nice to have man's approval, but when your conscience is clear and you've taken care of unconfessed sin and forsaken it, but aren't getting the "atta boys" you desire - remember Who's approval you are seeking. If it's God's, the praises of men should not hold any consequence! But knowing this principle and acting on it are very difficult at times.
"Lord, keep me blameless in Your sight so that I may point others to You! Make my heart tender to sin and confess it immediately."

Psalm 119:65-72

Overview:
Lord, You've been good to me, just as You said you would be. I believe what you say, now teach me good judgment and knowledge. Now that I'm obedient to Your Word, I'm no longer troubled and prone to wander. You are good, and you do good; teach me Your Word. There are those who have smeared me with lies. With my whole heart I will keep your commands. I am happy with Your laws, but their hearts are unfeeling. I'm glad I had troubles, for they made me turn to You and your laws. I would rather have laws from You, than thousands of gold and silver coins.
Application:
Yes, Lord, You have been good to me! David requests that God give him good judgment or discernment. That is so very important when dealing with people. Many people say the right things, but I/we need discernment to know if they are telling you the truth. Perhaps they are lying to themselves and don't realized they are telling untruths; but godly discernment helps us make those judgments. I can never realize the full goodness of God - that He Himself is good and all that He does is good. Even when my heart is breaking, and I am at the lowest of low points - God is good! Even when lies are spread about me - God is good. When I am in pain whether physical or emotional - God is good! I can call these things good, because they made me turn to You. If left to solve it or "fix" it on my own, I would not have run to You. When I am at the lowest I can go, there is no where else to turn but to You. All the money, wealth and fame that this world has to offer, are nothing compared to knowing You. I'd rather be under Your "restrictions" than have untold wealth. Nothing compares to You!!

Psalms 119:57 - 64

Overview:
The Lord is all that matters to me (is my portion), so I will obey what You say. I want you to be pleased with me, so give me what I don't deserve (grace) according to Your promise. When I evaluate/examine myself, I compare myself with Your Word (59). I don't think about whether or not I will obey You, rather I run to obey Your commands. The cords of the wicked try to ensnare me, but I remember your Word and it releases me. When I have sleepless nights, I rise to praise you because of your righteous rules. I am friends with those who fear You and are obedient to You. Your love covers all the earth - teach me Your truths!
Application:
How do we get so caught up in "living" that we think we need more than God?! David the writer of this Psalm had much to consume his thoughts, yet he calls Yahwah his portion - his total treasure, that which is the most significant thing to him. If David who was a king, warrior, husband, father etc. had God uppermost in his mind throughout his life, this is a great example of what I need to do as well.
I also like verse 60, where he says basically that he doesn't think twice about obeying God - he does it! We cannot pass off our stubborn wills with the phrase: "I'm only human," as though that somehow explains away our bad behavior. Obedience is better than sacrifice, better than saying we love someone. Obedience SHOWS we love them. How have I shown my love for God today?
I am also caught up with verse 62 where he says he rises at midnight to pray. This sounds less and less like a mere sleepless night, but rather a regular disciplined practice of his to pray at midnight. Still doing some research on this, but to me it shows discipline. He's not just praying, but gets up and makes it something of significance rather than the prayers I pray falling in and out of sleep because I'm having a "bad night."
Just when I was getting bored with Psalm 119 and its repetition of the wonders of the Word of God (something I should NEVER be bored with!!), God showed me some significant things from His Word that I might have passed over in a hurried reading before. Praise You God!!

Philippians 4:11-14

Overview:
(11b) I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. (12)  I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. (13) I can do all things through him who strengthens me. (14)  Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble.
Application:
Paul could be content because he knew the secret to facing any kind of adversity - it is the power of the Holy Spirit in him, working through him, which strengthened him. Yet (but also) it is good to have friends come alongside and uphold you during those times. I have some of those kinds of friends and am glad they care enough to share in my trouble.

Psalm 119:57 - 64

Overview:
Lord, You are mine! (NLT) I promise to obey Your Words. I want You to be pleased with me, and to be gracious to me because of Your promises. When I think about what to do with my life, I go to the Word. (59) I immediately obey your commands. Because I've been in the Word, when evil people try to trick me they cannot. (61) I praise you in the night. My friends are those who fear You too and keep your Word. The earth shows evidence of your continual love - teach me to know You and Your Word more!
Application:
I like verse 59 that says "When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies;" The writer shows his humanity here by saying he thinks about his life and what direction to take first - then he goes to God's Word for the final decision. I think this is how we should consider our life. Think about it - God has given us minds to be used; then before we decide, consult Scripture for God's direction in the matter. At the same time, the writer says in verse 60, that he will hasten or hurry w/o delay to obey God's Word and the instructions that are written there.
I also love how this portion starts out: "Lord, You are mine!" If I think about God in general terms, He is not "real" to me. It's only when I think of myself as a part of His plan, and that He has plans for me, that is when I can acknowledge Him as mine. This is on a more personal relational note.
"My Jesus, I love thee. I know thou art mine...if ever I loved thee, my Jesus tis now!"

Psalm 119:49 - 56

Overview:
The promises in Your Word give me hope. The fact that your promises give me life, is a comfort when I'm going through problems. Even though those who think they know everything mock me, I won't turn away from Your Word. It gives me comfort as I meditate on Scripture that I've known for years. I get furious with those who reject Your Word. Your Word has made me sing as I live. In the quiet of the night, I think of You, and your commandments which I keep. I will spend my life obeying your commandments.
Application:
I have known the comfort that meditating on Scripture brings (even if it's not word perfect). I find that when I lay down for the night, the thoughts that flood my mind are the the things that are most important to me - if the Lord comes to mind - that's a good thing! Usually it's worries from the day, but meditating on Scripture and the goodness of my God brings comfort and release from anxiety. I will spend my life obeying your commandments. (v. 56)

Psalm 119:41-48

Overview:
Lord, I want your constant love. Save me like you promised. If you do, then I will show those who mock me. I trust in Your Word, so do not take it from you. Your Word is the only thing I have. I promise to eternally obey your Word. I have confidence because I have been faithful to Your Commandments. Because of my knowledge of the Word, I can speak to kings about it. I delight and love your Commandments. I lift my hands in honor and respect of your Word. I meditate on what it says.
Application:
There seems to be a bit of negotiating in the first verses of this section. If You do as you've promised, then I will... But then I don't know the writer's heart, nor do I know the why they spoke in those days. This Psalm is about God's Word, but it is also a Psalm of adoration. Adoring the words that God has inspired the writers to author, is showing my love for God as well. He loves when I delight and meditate on His Word. Knowledge of the Word gives me the confidence I need in talking to others - even kings (leaders).

Psalm 119:35 - 40

Overview:
I am happiest when I can walk no other way but in Your path. Make me love Your Word more than money. I want to have eyes only for Your Word. Wake me up to Your Word, so that I have a proper reverence and fear of You. Make me give up my shameful ways because I know your Rules are good. I long for your Word! Make me alive again with Your goodness.
Application:
Over and over again the writer begs for God to make His Word come alive, and have meaning to him. Verse 35, gives me a picture of a path that is walled in, so that the walker has no choice but to stay on the path. I need that very thing!! We/I think we want choices, but when we have choices, we frequently choose selfishly or unwisely. David too, knows this about himself - therefore he is asking God to hem him in, so that he has no choice but to move in God's path. I can relate! What is the thing I treasure most? Whatever it is, make me love Your Word more than my "treasure." Wake me up, revive and renew me - give me the excitement that new believers have as they discover what is in Your Word. Knowing I will fail if I try in my own power, "make me abandon my shameful ways." (v.39) I am asking this of You because I know your Word/Rules are good for me!
"Trust and obey, for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. ...what He says we will do, where He sends we will go. Never fear, only trust and obey."

Psalm 119:31-34

Overview:
David begs God to help him to: not let him be put to shame; expand his understanding of the Scriptures; teach him the principles contained in the Word; give him understanding of what he is reading.
Then he promises to: cling to; pursue Bible study; keep all the principles in the Bible; obey and put into practice what he has read. Then, further promises to do these things "with my all my heart."
Application:
We so often say we want to understand God's Word; to have Him enlighten us on every nuance that it contains. BUT - am I willing to vow to God to pursue, keep, obey and practice all that I read??!! I know that is the desire of my heart, but I feel so undisciplined in this area - whether it's because I want to go my own way, or the lack of time spent in the Word compared to how much time I have available to be in the Word. I know enough that God does not want me to make vows only to break them. I believe my prayer should be: "Lord, you know my heart and you know my weaknesses. Make me desire to know you and your Word. Put the thirst inside of me that can only be quenched with time spent with you. Don't allow me to be satisfied with anything else the world has to offer, because it has no eternal value. Only Your Word can satisfy!!"

Psalm 119:25-30

Overview:
"I lie in the dust; revive me by Your word. I told You my plans, and You answered. Now teach me Your decrees.Help me understand the meaning of Your commandments, and I will meditate on Your wonderful deeds.  I weep with sorrow; encourage me by Your word. Keep me from lying to myself; give me the privilege of knowing Your instructions. I have chosen to be faithful; I have determined to live by Your regulations."  I included the passage from the Living Bible, and highlighted parts that really stood out in my mind. I usually rewrite the passage in my own words, but liked this so well - kept it as is.
Application:
The writer continues talking of the virtues of being in God's Word. He asks God to teach him; help him understand the meaning of the Word; he promises to meditate on what the Bible says about God; he desires the privilege of knowing the Word and concludes by saying that he is determined to live by the Book.
How often have I felt like I was lying in the dust or weeping in need of God's encouragement. How often I have lied to myself! What is the remedy? God's Word - knowing and meditating on it continually. There is no substitute for His Truth.

Psalms 119:17 - 24

Overview:
The writer is extolling the virtues of being in the Book continually. He asks for the eyes of his understanding to be open so that he can fully observe God's Word. Please don't hid your Word and its meaning from me. I long for the boundaries your Word puts around me. There are those around me that are arrogant and make fun of your Word - I am not one of them - I do what your Word says. There are those who plot against me, but still I am focused and am meditating on your Word. Your Word is the the bright spot in my life. It acts as a guide and counselor to me.
Application:
So much of what we learned in LBTB dealt with Ps 119, because Ps 119 is all about the Book. The psalmist realized that the whole world could be in turmoil around him, but when he was in the Word and mulling it over in his mind, nothing could make him fear or be angry about his circumstances. I claims the promises that if you study and know God's Word, God will bless you. "Lord, I want to be blessed by the study of your Word. Help me never see it as a chore, rather like the psalmist that rejoices and delights at the opportunity of spending alone time with God."

Personal Note:
Okay....doing it all doesn't work! I have to say that I have totally enjoyed being stretched and pushed beyond what I thought I could do in our Hendricks: Living By the Book study. Our final evening will be this coming Tuesday. Then I go to Nashville, for a couple of weeks - no Internet, so who knows when I'll blog again. But life will be "normal" fairly soon. There is no life for a Christian if you are not in The Book!!

Psalms 119:9-16

 Personal Note:
Just in case anyone actually reads this blog, I have been in God's Word, but either haven't had access to the Internet or was doing an in-depth passage study for a Bible study. I've missed my study on Psalm 119, so will try to do it all.
Overview
The writer asks and then answers the question: How can you fully live the Christian life (How can a young man keep his way pure?) The answers are: by guarding your life the way God's Word teaches; by seeking God with your whole heart so that you don't wander or seek anything other than God's Word; memorize Scripture (store up your Word in my heart) - because that keeps you from sin; have a teachable spirit asking Him to teach you; say what you've memorized and know to others; value the Bible as much as you do all the riches of this world; determine/commit to meditating on the Word - fixing your eyes only on God's ways. If you do those things God's Word will be a delight and will keep you from forgetting the Bible.
Application
I cannot truly love something I do not know intimately. You do not love something that you only have a superficial understanding of - if you love it, you will want to know every facet of it. I will speak of it, memorize it, commit to doing what it says, think about it over and over, fix my eyes on Him alone. There is no excuse for lack of memorizing (Don Knotts syndrome is only for TV shows - not an excuse!!) Lord help me to fall in love with you more. You already love me more than I even know. Now, I want to fall in love with You so that others cease to see me and only see You!!

Psalm 119:9-16

Overview:
If you want to live totally sold out to Jesus, then you must live by everything that the Bible says. You must seek God with your whole heart and ask His help to keep you on the path of obedience to His Word. Memorize the Bible so that invades your thinking and keeps you from things of the world. Bless God who enables you to understand the Bible. His praises should be continually on your lips. Treasure God's Word more than anything else in this world. If you do this, you will be happy to obey and won't forget what the Bible says.
Application:
The writer is totally enamored with God's Word. He seeks to memorize, to understand, to continually speak of it, to be obedient to it, to treasure it above all else. That is how I am to feel as well. It has been great studying the Book, now prayerfully I will Live by the Book. I want to feel like the psalmist at all times. God his prayer is my prayer.

Psalms 119:1-8

Overview:
You are blessed if you seek to be perfectly obedient to God and. You are also blessed it you seek to know God with every fiber of your being, and who rather than sin, do what He says. I desire to be one of those who continually are obedient to Your Word. Then my walk would be without shame because my eyes would be totally focused on Your Word. As I learn what Your Word says, I will praise you with a heart that is devoted to You. I will keep your Word, so don't leave me!
Application:
The writer wants to be one of those who keeps God's Word perfectly, who always does what is right and doesn't sin. But he knows better. He knows he is sinful. But he has set an awesome goal to do all that God says and to be a student of the Word.
Like David, I want to know God fully and to do all that He says, but I fall far short of that goal all the time. So what do I do? Give up? Say that I'm only "human," as though that is some excuse for sinning? God forbid that I should stay in that rut! Set the highest of goals before me, and strive with everything in my being to achieve it. I know I won't reach perfection this side of heaven, but that doesn't give me an excuse to live as I please and do as I wish. May my desires, be Your desires. May my heart abandon the things of this world, and be totally sold out to You!

Galatians 2:20

Overview:
"I am crucified with Christ; nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me."
Application:
The old man, the old me, died when I accepted Christ as Savior. Or...it should have died! Unfortunately, it all too often gets resurrected. If I have died and it is Christ who is alive in me, then it should look like I am possessed (in a good way) by Christ. I have no control over my own desires - I totally yield to His power. He is my Master and I do His bidding. That's how it should be - but I fall way short of the that ideal.
I must put on the full armor of God. Each piece's purpose is to help me make it through the day.. As F.B. Meyer so eloquently said: "Let us therefore day by day say: "Lord Jesus, wrap Thyself around me, that I may go forth, adequately attired to meet life's demands."

Joshua 1:9

Overview:
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."
Application:
Candy, stop being fearful! God has commanded you to be strong and courageous. Don't be overwhelmed, discouraged and stressed out (dismayed)! Why? Because the LORD (Yahweh, Jehovah, the proper name for God), is always with me wherever I go. This promise was made to Joshua, but is relevant for me today. Just as Yahweh had marching orders for Joshua upon entering the Promised Land, I have marching orders too. They are: (1) I must meditate on God's Word continually and be talking of it continually. There is no substitute for being in the Word. No such thing as ministry apart from the Word. Can't be too busy doing "ministry" to be in the Word - can't have one w/o the other. Ministry done w/o the empowerment of the Holy Spirit will be deflated; it will quickly run out of gas since I've not put fuel (God's Word) into it. God promises to bless His Word - not bless all my vain attempts to look good in His eyes and the eyes of others. (2) I must be strong even when obedience seems impossible, and when outside influences are trying to side-track me from that obedience. As I take that step of faith forward in obedience to Him, I will find that the opposition/problems I dreaded will fall away, as the Holy Spirit gives me the faith needed to be obedient. So....what am I worried about??!!

1 Thessalonians 5:23-28

Overview:
The God who is the Author of peace will set you apart from the world so that your inner man (thoughts, intentions, motivations etc.) would remain pure, focused on God alone until Christ's return. The One who saved you is faithful and has the power to carry out His desires.
Pray for us. Greet our fellow believers for us. You must promise to read this letter to all the believers. May God's unmerited favor (grace) be with you all.
Application:
We often fall into the trap of thinking that we have to "do" something to make the Christian "walk" happen. As much as I try, I will never fake, or be able to force myself to live in complete obedience to Christ. It is only God's Holy Spirit who resides within me that makes it possible. After all, He is the one who called me out of the world and saved me - having done that, He is more than capable of sanctifying (setting me apart) for Him. It's about control - who is in control of my life? If it's me - I'll fail every time, and be frustrated as Paul expressed in Romans 7. It is only yielding my "rights" to the Holy Spirit when I get a glimpse of what God truly desires for me. I say glimpse, because all too often, I take the reigns of control back - knowing I'm setting myself up for failure.
"Chip away at me Lord, until I am like You. Give me the stamina to stay the course, because Your discipline and the removal of dearly guarded secret sins is painful - but so very necessary!"

1 Thessalonians 5:19-22

Overview:
Don't resist or try to suppress the Holy Spirit's working in your life and the lives of others. Don't hate/despise/fail to listen to the teachings of those inspired by God, but examine what they say with God's Word. Once you have found it to be true, then you are to retain it and use it in your life. Do resist every form of evil.
Application:
Here is a list of 2 Do's and 3 Don'ts. The Holy Spirit is often talked about in terms of a fire. Here the word picture is of someone dousing the Holy's Spirit's fire with water or dirt. The Holy Spirit is continually at work in the lives of believers. However, He does not push His will or His power on us, rather He wants us to submit the control of our lives over to Him - this is being "filled" with the Holy Spirit. His admonition to not despise prophecies has to do with what he said previously about respecting and honoring those that teach us the Word (pastors). Historically the NT was a work in progress, so the Holy Spirit used prophecy both prophetic and for explanation of present situations the church was facing. How do you know if what someone is prophesying is true? Test it and compare it to other Scripture - it it's not, toss it, but if it is true, then you must obey it and put it into practice. Not only should false prophecy be avoided, but all kinds of evil (doing worldly practices, lust, envy, strife etc.) must be avoided. Stop trying to live with one foot in the world and the other foot in the spiritual world - it won't work, and it shows you have not yielded control to the Holy Spirit, and you/I am in danger of suppressing His power.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Overview:
Be joyful! Don't stop praying - be in an attitude of prayer at all times! Be thankful in all situations!
Application:
Paul's command to be joyful seems obvious, but I know better. It is hard to be joyful when circumstances are not what you hoped for; or worse when every tragedy that can happen is happening. Our joy isn't because of our circumstances, because everything is going my way, but in-spite of them. If I remain sad and depressed over what is going on in my life, then I am really saying I mistrust God. Isn't it God who said that He would let nothing happen unless He allowed it? He only allows things to happen for my good - not that they are good - but the situation will, if I am mold-able to God's direction, make me more like the Savior. Isn't that something I want?
Don't stop praying! It means being in continual contact with God. I may stop talking to Him while I do something, but pick up where you left off and continue praying. If I'm always praying, I'll not be as stressed trying to discover God's will for me, because I will have been in continual communication with Him.
Give thanks in all circumstances! Because God works everything for my good (Rom 8:28), then I must be thankful for whatever is sent my way (Are you listening to yourself?! Do I believe and act on what I'm typing?)
These three commands are not just good advice; they are God’s will for every Christian. I must be joyful, prayerful and thankful. God has commanded it - so it must be obeyed.
God please help me to show these qualities this evening. There is an inner battle going on that I want You to win. Give me your words to say, give me your thoughts to dwell on, not my anxious angry ramblings. Don't let Satan have the victory - You be victorious. Make me your ambassador. No matter what man has put in front of me to hurt, trick or demean - don't let me retaliate, keep me calm knowing You have allowed this to happen, and You will reward me if no one else does. May the riches of Your love, always be enough!

1 Thessalonians 5:14-15

Overview:
There should be no laziness - if someone is not doing their job, they need to be stirred up (admonished) to get busy and work. Those that lack self-confidence, timid, second guess themselves and easily become depressed - these need to be encouraged and supported. Those who are weak have not learned to lean on the Lord for support - they too will need your help. Be patient with the lazy, timid, weak believers among you, and don't retaliate or pay back evil that has been done to you. ALWAYS seek to do good to ALL.
Application:
No one likes the role of telling others what to do. It's easier in a work situation, but we avoid it at all costs in a church setting. Here Paul makes it very clear we are not to ignore what is going on around us. If someone isn't doing his job, then it is our/my responsibility to stir them up, give them a needed push to get busy. If we see those who are timid and don't take on any responsibility due to their lack of self-confidence, then we need to encourage them to get involved and support them in their efforts to be productive for Christ. Those who are weak spiritually and haven't learned to allow the Lord to control their lives, need to be instructed in how to live the Christian life so they too can be productive. Whatever you do, we must not be impatient and throw our hands up in frustration and walk away. Nor do we retaliate because their lack of functioning as they should has caused extra stress and more work on us. Rather we are to look for ways to be kind (good) to them.
This later part goes against the grain! Not only do I have to "babysit" them, but now I'm being asked to go out of my way to do acts of kindness for them. My plate is already overflowing because I've had to do their job - and now You're asking me to do their job and find extra acts of kindness to show them Your love?! How unfair...
Not really, when I look at what Christ has done for me. Hasn't He loved and encouraged me when I've been lazy, timid and weak? Haven't I experienced His patience? Has He ever paid me what I deserve when I've been in a less than productive mode? Absolutely not!! Am I not supposed to imitate Christ in all I do? Then instead of throwing a pity party for myself, I need to be thinking of how I can be God's hands and feet and show the love of Christ to all those I come in contact with. It is not enough to "be kind," but I need to do tangible acts of kindness. What have I done today to show by deed the love of Christ to someone else?

1 Thessalonians 5:9-13

Overview:
God has a destiny for us. We are not destined for wrath (Tribulation), but rather for the full benefit of our salvation (eternal life) given to us by Jesus Christ. He died for us so that we might live with Him. It doesn't matter whether you are spiritually apathetic or not (awake or asleep) - you will still receive salvation, because you obtain salvation because of Him, not from any good thing you may do. You are encouraging other believers about making the most of the time and commending them for the work they are doing, but continue doing it. Show respect to those who labor among you (pastor/elder) and are over you in the Lord, and keep you in line (admonish). Show them the honor (esteem) that is due them - solely for their work among you. If you do these things, you will be at peace in your dealings w/ those in the church.
Application:
What a timely passage for what God is teaching me about His church and how we must conduct ourselves. We all must be vigilant in seeking opportunities and making the most of our time on this earth. But ultimately it's not about me and what I do or do not do for Christ. It's about what He did for me on Calvary - that's how/why I have received salvation from my sins.
The part that strikes me the most in this portion is the exhortation to encourage one another and especially our pastors (those in authority over us). We are to show them respect, hold them in high regard for the office they fulfill in our churches. Note it does not say "if" they deserve it - it says they deserve it based on their work - opening up God's Word to us. I believe many pastors have done themselves a disservice by trying to fit in and be like everyone else. I understand that they are saying "I'm no better than you. I'm a sinner saved by grace just like you."
But they are neglecting the other aspect of their role and that is they are a picture of Christ's headship in the church, and because of that they should be respected, esteemed, held in high regard. It doesn't mean they never make mistakes, nor does it mean we have to refer to them as the "reverend so-and-so," as only God is to be revered in that way. It does mean that we should look up to their leadership, and respect them for their faithful exposition of Scripture, and listen to their wise counsel based on the principles of the Bible. Why?? Because God said to. He will honor us for our obedience and He will discipline the pastor if need be. Our disrespect for authority, whether it be for those in government, or those in our churches is a mark on God Himself. When He says "respect" and we do otherwise - we are in complete disobedience to Him.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-8

Overview:
"The day of the Lord" (The day of the Lord is a future period of time in which God will be at work in world affairs more directly and dramatically than He has been since the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is a time referred to by many Old Testament prophets (e.g., Isa_13:9-11; Joe_2:28-32; Zep_1:14-18; Zep_3:14-15). As these and other Old Testament verses indicate, the day of the Lord will include both judgment and blessing. That day begins immediately after the Rapture of the church and ends with the conclusion of the Millennium. This day is a major theme of prophecy with its fullest exposition in Revelation 6-19. ~Bible Knowledge Commentary) will come totally unexpectedly. Just when you think everything is safe and peaceful, He will come - and can not be held back. (example of labor pains). You, however, don't need to be surprised because you are children of light. Work hard, be alert and be watchful. Those who relax and let down their guard do it at night. But you are children of the day, you are protected by your spiritual armor (breastplate of faith and love and the helmet of salvation) - the breastplate will protect your courage and love for God and fellow believers and the helmet will protect your thinking.
Application:
Make the most of your time...I can't quit even though I may want to. The Lord's return is imminent and once it comes, there is not time to wish I had done more. Put on the defensive weapons to ward off Satan and his deceptive thoughts from clouding my thinking. Use my time wisely - ask myself, "Is this how to reach the most people? Is this the best tool for our times? etc."  I need to always be current, yet true to Scripture, to reach this present world with the gospel.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Overview:
We want you to understand about those who have died that were followers of Christ. You don't need to grieve the way unbelievers do that don't have hope for the loved one who has passed away. Because of Jesus' death and resurrection, God will bring the dead in Christ to heaven. Matter of fact, those that are still alive at the Lord's coming will go to heaven after the dead have been raised. In that day, Jesus will come from heaven with a powerful commanding voice and with the sound of God's trumpets to bring those that have died as believers home to heaven with Him. Then those who are Christians that are alive will be caught up with those that were dead, and we will together meet Jesus in the clouds, and we will be with Him for ever. This should be a comfort to you and to others when a loved believer dies.
Application:
Death is not something we like to talk about but it is inevitable unless the Lord returns before we die. We need to be prepared and ready for the day of His return. There will be no time to witness to the neighbor, or make sure family members have trusted Christ - it will be too late! We need to be ready at any time for His coming by telling others about the gospel message now - we are not promised tomorrow, so therefore are foolish to put things off. It is comforting to think about being reunited with our loved ones after they die. When the Lord returns for His own, I am glad to say that I will be with Him. The question is: 'Will I be ready?!' I must tell all around me, and loved ones far away that Jesus came to pay the penalty for their sin and they must accept His death as the only means of escaping the punishment of hell and receiving heaven - their eternal home. There is no time to lose!

1 Thessalonians 4:9-12

Overview:
I want to speak to you now about loving your brother in Christ. You have been taught by God Himself to love one another, and you are doing that, but I am telling you (urging you) to do this more. Non-believers (outsiders) are always watching you, and you need to be a testimony to them at all times. Some other things they watch are: don't stir up strife and anger others (live quietly); find a job to do and do it well (mind your own affairs) doing the work yourself as we showed you. If you do these things, this is showing outsiders a good example of a Christ-follower, a true Christian.
Application:
I like the part that says - I know you are showing brotherly love towards others, but you can do more! Never be satisfied with what you are doing for God, I can always do more. When I have a job, do it well. It is important to have a job so that you are not falling into being someone who stirs up strife. When you are not happy, you spill it over onto others. Therefore, if you have a job and are busy doing it, you don't have time to sit around feeling sorry for yourself, or being critical of others, because you are too busy. Hard works is a good thing. I need to be mindful that outsiders are judging Christ by my actions. Did I give a good impression of my Lord and Savior today?

1 Thessalonians 4:1-8

Overview:
You're doing great, but you need to be doing better (do so more and more) in your walk with God. You need to stand clear of any kind of sexual immorality - be in control of your body and your lusts, that you do not act like the unsaved. God will punish those who disobey this commandment. God doesn't want us to be impure, but pure and holy. Know that if you disregard this, that you are disobeying God, not me.
Application:
If I follow Paul's example, I will point out sin in a fellow believer's life and plead with him to return to a godly pure life. Sometimes it's far easier to ignore the problem than deal with it, but experience says if I do that the problem will grow. Confronting in a loving manner is the order of the day.

1 Thessalonians 3:6-13

Overview:
Since Timothy is back with us reporting on this time with you, we are greatly encouraged! It helps us stand firm knowing you too are standing fast in the Lord.  How can we give thanks for all the joy this news has brought to us? We continue to pray earnestly for you all that we will be able to come to you and help you in your walk, and that your love for one another would continue to grow, so that one day you can stand before God with blameless hearts.
Application:
Paul's love for them is still poured out in this portion of the letter. It made me think again how much Scripture "space" is taken up with Paul's concern for these churches that he started. Why would God want that repeated over and over? There has to be a reason. I think the reason is that all too often our tendency is once we see people saved, we move on too quickly. It's inconvenient for us to pour our lives into one person, or a small group - when we could be reaching so many more. The problem with that thinking is that the crowds may be bigger, but are you really making a difference in lives?! Initially - yes, but over the long-haul, not really. That is the example I believe Paul is hammering into our heads - that just like you don't give birth and say - "Well that's done. I'll move on now," you wouldn't do that with a new believer. But often times that's what we do; unlike Paul who sounds like the nurturing parent throughout these Pauline Epistles.
May I never lose the desire/love to have a meaningful ministry with a few. Quality, not quantity is the goal. If we take the time to build into people's lives, one day they too will reproduce and then the quantity will come. But in the meantime, be a patient farmer, and nourish the crop you have until it is full grown ready to reproduce.

1 Thessalonians 3:1-5

Overview:
Paul reminds them that when he had to stay behind in Athens, he sent Timothy to help them grow in their new found faith, and so they wouldn't be discouraged by what was happening with Paul. Paul reminds them that he had warned them that he was going to suffer for the cause of Christ, and now it has happened. He became so lonely for news of them, he sent word to learn about their continued faith. He wanted to check to make sure the tempter (Satan) hadn't gotten them off the path they had begun.
Application:
It's not enough to share your faith and lead someone to make a decision for Christ. You must follow up and help them to grow. They are like a tender young plant that needs continual nourishment and care. Discipleship is so important both for the mature believer (to be obedient to the Word) and for the new convert, to be able to have someone help them with questions they may be too embarrassed to ask. The sad part is that often new converts grow quickly and "out-grow" existing believers who ought to be growing, but are just warming the seats of our churches. Oh to be a growing Christian...we are never too mature to grow!

Psalm 119

Personal Note:
Today I was studying various passages of Scripture about why it is important to study God's Word. I was especially drawn to the Psalm 119 passage. Along w/ 4 other ladies, I am beginning a study called, "Living By the Book, by Howard Hendricks - a basic tutorial of how to study the Bible for oneself.
Overview:
Over and over again the writer vows to walk in Your precepts, Your testimonies, Your ways, Your statutes, Your word - all names for the word of God. He acknowledges that when he obeys God's word that he is joyous because he knows he is pleasing to God. The Bible kept him from sinning, and it helped him to grow to spiritual maturity, and corrected him when he strayed from the right path that God had for him. He expresses thanks for the privilege of knowing what God wants him to know as seen in the Word of God.
Application:
Do I truly love God's Word? Do I long for it to sustain me? Or do I see how long I can put it off - always on my "to do list"  - but always allowing other things to take a higher priority? Why am I anxious and worried about things that are totally out of my control? I am focused on the problem, rather than the Problem Solver. I've read and know it to be true that God moves the hearts of kings - if that is so, then He can change my heart, and all those around me. Why do I allow myself to feel overwhelmed - that there is no hope? Perhaps it's hormonal or chemical or even hereditary, but I also know it is because of lack of complete faith that God is in control of ALL THINGS. If that were a reality in my life, why should I worry or fret. I am weak in this area because I have not committed God's Word to memory so that when these times of dark depression and worry overtake me, I can transform my mind from dark to His light. God's Word must be a priority in my life so that I can grow and be effective in all areas of my life, but most of all to drive away the overbearing dark cloud of depression that all too often comes over me.
I am especially aware of it because I am out from under it. I have a renewed energy, a desire to be involved rather than to hide or isolate myself. Things look better to me, my future doesn't seem to be so bleak. I pray that this time will last... How can I be anxious if God is in control?! Think on these things - think on His Word, meditate on what I've read day and night - especially in the night when sleep eludes me. God will not turn away from me, He is well aware of my pain. He has provided a way of escape if I will but take it - read the Word, study it - make it mine. Live by the Book!!

1 Thessalonians 2:17-20

Overview:
Because of their arrest, they were "torn away" from the Thessalonican church, but only in body because in spirit we never left you. We always desired to see you face to face, especially me (Paul), but Satan was always putting roadblocks in our way. You are our crown of joy - you are what we will present to Jesus at His return. You are our glory and our joy.
Application:
Our spiritual "children" are a delight - especially to see them continue to grow in the Lord. But just like my own children, it is painful when they are not walking with God and seemingly have chosen to toss aside what they knew to be the truth. I don't understand that - you either believe something and it changes you, or you don't and stay in your old ways. I've been able to experience lots of things in ministry, but there is nothing - absolutely nothing that compares to mentoring a young believer. It's invigorating to see Christ through their eyes!!

1 Thessalonians 2:13-16

Overview:
You knew that the message we brought you was indeed from God Himself, even though we were the ones speaking it. You are putting that word into action (at work in you believers). You followed the model of the churches in Judea, because you as Gentiles, suffered from your countrymen in much the same way as the Judean churches suffered at the hands of the Jews. These same Jews killed Jesus and the prophets and drove us out, which went against God and all of mankind. They did everything in their power to keep from sharing the gospel message with you Gentiles - to keep you from being saved. Their sins kept piling up against them, but God in His anger has judged them at last!
Application:
When you share the gospel or even teach someone the Bible, make sure they are always pointed to the Teacher - not me. Make sure what I say - I do. I must practice what I teach. God punishes those who sin. He may not do it in my timing, but He will! He hates sin and will only allow it to go on as long as it suits His purpose. If I'd stop worrying about why God doesn't do such-and-such to someone else, and worried more about my relationship that is less than snowy white, then perhaps God would give them what they deserve all the quicker. He knows that I get anxious and angry over continued sin, perhaps He is using it to teach me patience and total reliance on Him?! This world is not "fair" - we will not see "justice" practiced consistently. Why do I foolishly think that non-believers and believers will stop sinning?! Take care of me - and my sin!

1 Thessalonians 2:9-12

Overview:
Paul is reminding them that they worked hard and long hours so that the Thessalonian church would not have to support them while they were there preaching the gospel. They exhibited "holy, righteous, and blameless conduct" during this time. This time he says he treated them as a father with his children. A father is the disciplinarian who exhorts and encourages his children to do the right thing just as Paul and his fellow laborers did.
Application:
When I work long hours on various projects for the church, I need to be holy, righteous and blameless (not complaining or seeking approval from others by telling them all that I am doing). It is for the Lord, not for anyone else that I should be doing service/ministry.

1 Thessalonians 2:1-8

Personal Note:
Just spent some quality time previewing Howard Hendricks', Living By the Book, DVDs. This is the Howard Hendricks I grew up with - looks like, based on dress, back in the 80's. He's at the height of his game and very funny, practical and convicting in his presentation. This is going to be a great series!
Overview:
Our coming to you has a purpose. Remember how we were treated so horribly at Philippi, but even so the message was delivered with boldness. The reason why people come to hear us is that we have the approval of God Himself, not because we have to trick or deceive people into hearing the Gospel message. We speak to please God, not men, because He examines our hearts. We also did not come to make you feel good about yourselves (words of flattery) or to get something from you (pretext for greed), nor was it to be famous apostles of Christ. Rather we were nurturing to you like a mother with her children. So because of our love for you, we desire to share the gospel as well as our own selves with you.
Application:
Often Paul's letters are very similar in making it clear their purpose and their message. What stands out to me is the regard he had for the Thessalonicans. He lovingly cared for them as a mother with her young. That is a self-sacrificing kind of love, when a child needs you, you leave what you are doing and go to them. Am I selfless enough, or do my selfish needs take precedence in ministering to others? He goes on to say he will share the message, but also himself with them. I just had a call - a very frantic call - about something I could not help with, although I made the offer. I was in the middle of the most important thing I could be doing - studying God's Word. Surely God doesn't want me to stop that and take care of some minor problem?! Sounds to me like He does. Now, we must remember that there is a balance. You can not give out to others, what you do not have - I cannot share from my knowledge of God's Word, if I have no knowledge of the Word. Study is important, but so are people.
"God help me to have Your nurturing yet discerning heart for people and ministry. Make my days, hours, and moments count for you. Help me persevere when others don't understand my heart and motives. Make me more concerned about pleasing You, than guarding my reputation and defending my every action. Make me more like Your Son!"

1 Thessalonians 1

Personal Note:
Yeah!! A problem that I've been working on the webpage is now solved! And...(here goes some boasting) - I was right and the tech was wrong. He still is my good support guy, but it's nice to know that persistence and God watching out for me are what made the difference today. Thankfully it wasn't a problem that others were seeing, it was a behind the scenes headache, but very important problem that would affect the site's future changes if not solved. (I know, BORING - but if you spent over 16 hours on a problem, you'd be rejoicing too!)
Also found out today that I was going to get to watch Catherine's graduation from grad school. Then the next day is Sunday, and they've planned a special brunch for Ash's mom and I. What neat kids I have!!
Overview:
This letter to the Thessalonians is from Paul, Silvanus and Timothy. He commends their faith as evidenced by what they do (labor of love) and their confidence in their salvation (steadfastness of hope). Paul and his companions were models of Christ-like behavior before them and they began to imitate him and the Holy Spirit. They became Christians inspite of the affliction they were suffering at the time, and that led to them being an example to the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. They were such a testimony to believers everywhere because they formerly were idol worshipers that turned to the living God.
Application:
If I am exhibiting Christ-likeness, then others will notice and want to know more about the God I serve. That is something to aim for... The other thing that hit me was that they turned to Christ while under affliction. Being a Christian would only add to their afflictions, but they were true lovers of God and wanted to be imitators of Him. We turn to God when we are having hard times - that's common, but if it would cause us additional pain, I fear - at least w/ out the Holy Spirit's filling/control - that I might postpone my acceptance if I were in their place.

Ephesians 6: 18-24

Overview:
Pray always; be on the alert, persevere! Paul requests prayer so that God would give him the words to say to make the gospel message clear and to give him boldness in its presentation. Tychicus is coming to you to tell you all about me so that you won't be concerned. Peace, love with faith and God's grace be with you all who "love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible love."
Application:
I love that last part - loving Christ with an "incorruptible love." My take on that is that there are many things that vie for our affections, things that would seek to take us away from our first love. Our/my prayer and aim is to love Him with an incorruptible love, one that can't be swayed. We say we want to love Him  more...more than what? More than our family, more than our careers, more than our comfort, more than wealth, more than anything else in the world - do I love Him more than I love me? Is my love for God corruptible or incorruptible - I pray that it is the latter.

Ephesians 6:10-17

Overview:
The only strength is from the Lord using His strength. Put on your Godly armor that will enable you to stand against all the devil sends your way. Your fight isn't with men, but against the forces of evil and wickedness. That is why you must wear your spiritual armor to enable you to resist when the battle begins. Stand firm with confidence because you have the armor of: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith will allow you to extinguish the enemies blows. Guard your head with salvation and use the sword of the Bible as you fight.
Application:
I struggled this weekend with anxious thoughts - thoughts that Satan kept bringing to mind again and again. Our church is at such a crucial juncture - do we continue to maintain (I pray we do not!), or do we press on to make a difference for God. In many ways, I feel our leadership has let us down because they have not stood firm in the various battles that have come our way. I pray that our leadership will be on their knees seeking God's will in the decisions to be made - as they could make or break the future of our church. But these are things I have no part in, which for me, is excruciating having to trust others for decisions that seem so obvious to me. This is an opportunity for me to submit. I need to remind myself that God can turn the heart of kings, so surely He can change the minds of men who love Him! Oh me of little faith... I need to put on my spiritual armor and fight against Satan - not against my own army.
God, I need you to guard my heart and mind - help me to trust when I want to run in fear. Make me stand firm, knowing I have an Invincible Commander who goes to battle before me.

Ephesians 6:1-9

Overview:
Paul begins by telling children to obey and honor their parents, and this is a promise - "it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land." Fathers discipline but not to cause anger and rebellion. Instruct them in things of the Lord.
As you work, whether slave or on the job, do your work as though you were doing it for Christ Himself. Masters and bosses should not threaten always remembering your Master in heaven who is not concerned w/ your position.
Application:
It is very hard to work for no one's approval but God's.  We all seek to see if others are noticing that we are doing a good job. We are only to take on the jobs that He directs us to. And once we take on a job, we are to do it to the best of our ability knowing God (if no one else) will reward us for it in heaven. If we are over others, treat them with respect trying to practice the way God is over us and how He controls us. My take away from this is that I don't need to prove anything to anyone except God.

Ephesians 5:22-33

Overview:
Wives submit to your husband in all things. Husbands love your wives following Christ's example of how He loved the church - gave His life for her. A man shall leave his father and mother and "hold fast" to his wife becoming one. A man should love his wife as much as he loves himself and the wife should respect her husband.
Application:
I used to have problems with these verses until I understood the concept Paul was getting out. If a husband loves his wife the way Christ loved us, how can you not love someone who is ready to die for you, someone who cares for you as much as they do themselves and also seeks to nourish you - help you to be all you can be? When you put it in that perspective wives get off easy - they just need to submit and respect. The man does all the work and the woman gets the benefits. Totally opposite of the women't lib agenda - but that model never worked and this model does.

Ephesians 5:11-21

Overview:
Don't get involved with things that are not pleasing to the Lord - rather expose them fro what they are. Once they are out in the light, it becomes visible to all. When Christ's light is shining on the darkness, it will shrivel away. Don't even speak about these evil things. You must make the most of your time here on earth because there is evil all around you. Know what God's will is for you and do it! Let the Holy Spirit take over so that you are no longer master of yourself but it is the Holy Spirit doing the work in you (much like wine masters the person who drinks too much). When you are filled/controlled by the Holy Spirit you will be joyful and thankful  to God for everything, and your fellow believers will be encouraged by your attitude also. Don't always seek your own way, but just as Christ submitted to the will of His Father, submit to one another in love.
Application:
Making the most of my time...that is what I'm striving to do w/ the Lord's strength. I could do a much better job of that if I were 100% controlled/filled with the Holy Spirit. I still stubbornly try to do it in my own strength instead of using His - not smart or efficient. I've gotten much better about not insisting on my own way (always thought my way was best), but could still use some improvements there. Instead of whining and complaining about what we don't have, I am very thankful for what we do have. God has supplied our needs and even given us some of our desires. I have much to be thankful for.

Ephesians 5:1-10

Overview:
Just like little children try to do what their parents do - that's how you should be with Jesus - try to be like Him. Paul speaks very harshly to those who are involved in sexual sins. He says that we should not talk crudely - even jokingly, because it is out of place. Instead our lives should be marked with thankfulness. Anyone who is involved in sexual immorality, impure and covetousness has no part in heaven. Don't be deceived by worthless speech, or become partners with them. You are different now - once you were in darkness but now you are in God's light. So walk like children of the light. You will know you are walking in light because you will be doing things that are good and right, always trying to do what is pleasing to God.
Application:
I want to be imitating my Father so much, that everyone can easily identify me with the family resemblance. I want my life to be characterized by thankfulness instead of wanting more. I pray I would be discerning in what I hear - that I would not be a people follower, but a God follower. I was disturbed today to find out that John Piper had invited Rick Warren to speak. If I was a man follower, it would shake my faith, but looking to God,  it brings me to my knees in prayer that Piper and all of us would not be guilty of compromise. Warren's ecumenical stance in saying Muslims and Christians pray to the same God is heresy - but few are willing to call him on it. It grieves me that Piper who is a very bright theologian, would choose to ignore that, and allow him to represent him in this guest appearance.

Ephesians 4:25-32

Overview:
Paul reminds them to be honest, don't be angry and if you do, take care of it right away (don't let the sun go down on your anger). Don't allow Satan to get a foothold on your life (give no opportunity to the devil). Don't steal - rather work hard and share the profits of your labor with others in need. The only words that come from your mouth should be things that build up others, nothing else. Do not disobey the Holy Spirit (do not grieve the Holy Spirit). Put all worldly speech and thoughts away (bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, slander and malice) and be kind to each other, forgiving each other just like the example of Christ and the way He forgave you.
Application:
The fact that Paul is saying pretty much the same things over and over again in each of his letters, tells me these things were just as common for believers to slip into as they are today. I know the right thing to do, but continually fall into the "old" Candy. The only speech that comes out of my mouth should be that which builds others up in their faith. Kindness and forgiving should characterize my life. When it doesn't, I'm grieving the Holy Spirit, because He is continually prodding me to do the right thing, while I am continually disobeying or quenching those proddings - therefore I am grieving Him by my actions.

Ephesians 4:17-24

Overview:
Paul demands (insists) that the believers don't act like they did before they were saved. An unbeliever (Gentile) doesn't understand spiritual things, their thinking was messed up. Their life was separate from God because their hearts were hardened to spiritual things. Because they lost their spiritual sensitivity, they threw in the towel and  gave up. Their lives were characterized by: lust, indulgence and greed.
Paul reminds the Ephesians that that was not their spiritual history - they didn't grow up that way. You were taught to put off the old self which is sinful and corrupt, and put on the new. You must change/renew your thinking so you can put on the new self which is created to be like God. You are now to be characterized by righteousness and holiness.
Application:
We (I) get so caught up in my liberties, but Paul says stop acting like an unbeliever - stop acting like you did before you came to Christ. I totally agree that when you try to see how close you can imitate the world, but still be a Christian (once saved always saved) - you lose your spiritual sensitivity. Your focus has changed. Instead of imitating Christ, we are imitating the world - trying to walk a balance between both worlds. It can't be done!! We are to put off the old and put on the new. It's like taking a bath and smelling all fresh and clean, and then going to the hamper and putting on your smelly old underwear and clothes. We wouldn't dream of doing that, but that's what we try to do in our spiritual lives. We are clean because of Christ's payment on our behalf, but instead of desiring to stay clean and pure, we dig in the stinky hamper of the world and put on what it has to offer.
"God help me to take off and keep off the old man and only choose to wear clean clothes that have been washed by You!"

Ephesians 4:8-16

Overview:
When Jesus came to earth, He gave spiritual gifts to men to fulfill His purposes of giving each believer what he needs and to also use those gifts for the church. He wanted us to be mature so we aren't tossed about with every new doctrine or smooth schemes that come along. We need to be mature enough to be able to stand up  to what is wrong - to speak the truth in love. We are to be like a body, all the parts are needed, all the parts have a special purpose and function. We are all to function in a mature loving way.
Application:
God has given me many gifts. Some of those gifts can be used in the workplace, but their primary purpose is for use withing the body - the church. When I don't use my gifts within the body, something is missing and therefore the body does not function to its full capacity. It's not because I am "all that " - it's because He gave them to me to used for the purpose of complimenting other people's gifts with my own. We are a team. Each member is needed and fulfills a special function that isn't complete until we are all using our gifts the way He designed.

Ephesians 4:1-7

Overview:
Paul urges them to walk in a way that is worthy of their calling. Their walk should exemplify: humility, gentleness, patience, bearing with one another lovingly, while maintaining Christian unity. Believers should do that because we are all parts of the same body with one Spirit working in all of us. We have only one God, one faith, one baptism, one Master who rules over all of us. God has given each one of us the grace we will need according to His plan - He gave us the amount of grace we would need.
Application:
Am I living the Christian life in a manner that is "worthy of my calling?" I need only to see what a worthy walk looks like to answer that question. When people think about me, do words like: humility, gentleness, patience, forbearance and a peacemaker come to mind? I would have to say "no." I am perhaps better than I was before, but those things are the softer side of me that often don't show as much as the pushy, angry, anxious, grudge-holding me is seen. I can't fault my personality. If I did, it would be like saying God made a mistake - it's His fault - He made me this way. No, according to verse 7, He has given us just the amount of grace we need to carry out a worthy walk. Could it be that I am trying to live the Christian life apart from the Holy Spirit's power? If so, I am doomed to failure. God has designed it so that I can't do it apart from Him.
"May Christ be seen in me, and not me be seen in me!"

Ephesians 3:14-21

Personal Note:
Routine...routine...routine! My routine has changed and therefore my QT is all out of whack, and therefore the steady constant strength I derive from it is diminished. Time to make a new routine. I have a sweet Jewish friend who has committed that her feet will not touch the ground until she says her prayers each morning. That would be a good example to follow. I'm home now, back to my brown chair by the window - perhaps I can get back into a new and improved routine. Where's that cup of coffee?!....
Overview:
Paul prays for the believers in this way: (1) that ... He may grant you to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that (2) Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, (3) being rooted and grounded in love, (4) may have strength tocomprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, (5) and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you (6) may be filled with all the fullness of God. He then concludes with a wonderful benediction: Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,  to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Application:
This was sooo good just the way it was, that I couldn't condense it and do it justice. These are all things that God wants to do in my life (and yours). I need wisdom that is rooted in love. Without being rooted in love, that wisdom, strength and knowledge don't have the gentleness and compassion they should have. In my fleshly spirit I would use wisdom, strength and knowledge to beat up myself or those around me in anger - being rooted in love smooths that out, softens my responses. I love the part about the breadth and length and height and depth - I get this mental picture of a cube where every bit of space is completely filled with all six of the above items. I need to be running on spiritual "full" - instead of partial or even almost filled. Ahh..routine...my routine must keep me on full!

Ephesians 3:7-13

Overview:
Paul speaks of his calling to be a minister of the gospel. His call is to preach to the Gentiles "the unsearchable riches of Christ," and to bring to their understanding those things that had previously been hidden from them. He is able to do this because of what Christ did for us on the cross. We are now able to "have boldness and access with confidence" as we come to God in prayer. He ends this section by asking them to not lose heart because he is suffering.
Application:
Christ died so that I might have access to God's throne, that I could bring my requests with boldness before Him. What strikes me is that such a high price was paid for something I don't use nearly enough!! How grieved God must be that we don't fully use the gift He has given us! I know as a parent, when I have sacrificed financially to give my kids something they want, only to find that it is gathering dust someplace, it bothers me. My angst is so infinitesimally small compared to how it must grieve the Father that He sacrificed His Son's life, but I don't access the right Christ died to give me - to come boldly to the Father in prayer. Pray more, worry less, and be thankful for the price that was paid for my freedom!

Ephesians 3:1-6

Overview:
Paul calls his oversight of the Gentiles "stewardship" - he is looking after them for His Master. He reveals the "mystery of Christ" is that the Gentiles are "fellow heirs," on the same footing with the Jews in their relationship to Christ. Gentiles are members of the same body of believers because of their relationship with Christ.
Application:
Although I am on the same level as His chosen people, the Jews, I and all Gentiles have not replaced them. I have been added to them, but that addition did not annihilate their relationship to God. I should have a special place in my heart (and I do) for my Jewish brothers and sisters. We are fellow partakers of the gift of salvation. We each have to decide if we accept that free gift. We don't receive it because of who we are or what we've done - we receive it because of what He did for us. Jews and Gentiles must accept that Christ is the promised Messiah and He came to set us free - free from the bondage of sin and its eventual penalty - hell.

Ephesians 2:11-22

Overview:
Remember Gentiles that there used to be a division between Jews and yourselves, based in part on Jews being circumcised and you were not. But because of Christ, you are both brought together. "For He Himself is our peace, who has made us both one (v. 14) and has broken down in His flesh the dividing wall of hostility..." Now Jews and Gentiles alike have access to God through the Holy Spirit. We are one body and Jesus is the cornerstone.
Application:
There are many things that divide us as Christians, but we must keep in mind that if we have accepted Christ's free gift of salvation, then we are one body in Christ. Differences must be set aside for the purpose of winning others to Christ. Our enemy should not be w/in the body, but Satan and his demons. A house divided will fall. We cannot be effective in this world if we are at war w/ one another. If we focused on what we have in common, perhaps the world would view us differently and we would be known by our love instead of being known for our "narrow" thinking. I'm not saying that doctrine is not important, it is, but - if I'm going to be in heaven w/ someone who holds a different doctrine than I, I need to focus on what we have in common so we can be victorious in our battle against the world and Satan, and be victorious in winning souls for Christ.

Ephesians 2: 1-10

Overview:
Before we trusted Christ, we were dead in our sins. We once followed the world and its ruler, Satan, (the prince of the power of the air- v. 2) as still do those who have not believed the gospel message. BUT GOD (love that part) even though we were mired in our sins, saved us - purely out of grace, because we did not deserve it or earn it. It's by grace you have been saved (2:8-9) not of works, so that you couldn't boast that you had anything to do with your salvation. Salvation is a free gift from God. God created us - His workmanship. He created us to do good works, a plan He had for us before we were born - a plan so we would know how to walk the walk.
Application:
Nothing I can do will earn me more of God's love. He knew about me before the creation of the world, and drew me to Himself, knowing I could not/would not come on my own volition. I live day-by-day by His timetable for my life. I want to live my life yielded to His control as His will is best for me. He had a plan for me, and prayerfully I am living it out for His glory.

Ephesians 1:15-23

Overview:
Paul is thankful for hearing that the Ephesian church was staying faithful to Christ, and their love for all believers (saints). He continually thanks God for them. He prays the following for them: (1) that they would have wisdom and continually grow in their knowledge of God; (2) that the "eyes of their hearts" would know in a richer way than before the "hope of their calling" - what Christ did for them, is doing presently, and what will await them in glory; (3) that they would understand God's immeasurable power. He goes on to say what that power is - it saved us; raised Christ from the dead; seated Him at the right hand of God the Father; made Him the ultimate authority and sovereign over all (made everything His footstool); God gave the church into Christ's safekeeping. The "church" is His body.
Application:
As I read this, I kept thinking the phrase - "that I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection." It's all about knowing God. Not a superficial knowledge of facts but, an in-depth love affair with Him. This is obviously important because Paul keeps bringing it up again and again in his letters to the churches.
"Lord, help me know you in way that changes me to be like your true Son. I know lots of facts, but I want to have a deep non-shakable relationship with You - one that stands firm and testifies to all who see, that when the tough times come, You are all we have and You are all we need. You are "all in all."
