Overview:
God has a destiny for us. We are not destined for wrath (Tribulation), but rather for the full benefit of our salvation (eternal life) given to us by Jesus Christ. He died for us so that we might live with Him. It doesn't matter whether you are spiritually apathetic or not (awake or asleep) - you will still receive salvation, because you obtain salvation because of Him, not from any good thing you may do. You are encouraging other believers about making the most of the time and commending them for the work they are doing, but continue doing it. Show respect to those who labor among you (pastor/elder) and are over you in the Lord, and keep you in line (admonish). Show them the honor (esteem) that is due them - solely for their work among you. If you do these things, you will be at peace in your dealings w/ those in the church.
Application:
What a timely passage for what God is teaching me about His church and how we must conduct ourselves. We all must be vigilant in seeking opportunities and making the most of our time on this earth. But ultimately it's not about me and what I do or do not do for Christ. It's about what He did for me on Calvary - that's how/why I have received salvation from my sins.
The part that strikes me the most in this portion is the exhortation to encourage one another and especially our pastors (those in authority over us). We are to show them respect, hold them in high regard for the office they fulfill in our churches. Note it does not say "if" they deserve it - it says they deserve it based on their work - opening up God's Word to us. I believe many pastors have done themselves a disservice by trying to fit in and be like everyone else. I understand that they are saying "I'm no better than you. I'm a sinner saved by grace just like you."
But they are neglecting the other aspect of their role and that is they are a picture of Christ's headship in the church, and because of that they should be respected, esteemed, held in high regard. It doesn't mean they never make mistakes, nor does it mean we have to refer to them as the "reverend so-and-so," as only God is to be revered in that way. It does mean that we should look up to their leadership, and respect them for their faithful exposition of Scripture, and listen to their wise counsel based on the principles of the Bible. Why?? Because God said to. He will honor us for our obedience and He will discipline the pastor if need be. Our disrespect for authority, whether it be for those in government, or those in our churches is a mark on God Himself. When He says "respect" and we do otherwise - we are in complete disobedience to Him.
